All aboard! Beer train to replace 5000 lorries

This week, we launched the first beer train in Belgium. The train will transport Jupiler by rail between our brewery in Jupille, Wallonia, and the Delhaize distribution centre in Ninove in East Flanders. Once this project runs at full capacity, it will remove the equivalent of 5000 lorries from the roads every year.

This unique project is a collaboration between partners across the value chain – Delhaize, transport company Remitrans, transport experts Lineas and the province of East Flanders.

The beer train is an example of how we lead the way in green logistics. Through our multimodal transport chain, we continuously look for the best combinations to deliver beer to our consumers in a sustainable way, without compromising on freshness and quality.

Fewer lorries on the roads means less congestion and less carbon dioxide output. We have set ourselves the target of reducing CO2 emissions by 25% by the end of 2017. This project will certainly make a contribution. Our previously launched beer boat and the ecocombi are other examples of how we contribute to a cleaner world.

I am very proud that this partnership has succeeded in pulling thousands of lorries a year from the roads. We hope this is only the beginning and others will follow our example.
